Can I eat meat before taking ART medicine?
Aug 20, 2017

I am currently on Efavirenz/Lamivudine/Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate 600 mg/300 mg/300 mg Tablets. I was advised to take one tablet per day 2 hours after dinner. Can I eat non-vegtarian food for dinner before taking this tablet ? What about fatty foods and fried items?

Response from Dr. Young

Hello and thanks for posting.

Your medication (efavirenz/lamivudine/tenofovir) should preferably be taken around bedtime (not just after dinner). There is no restriction on what you can eat while taking efavirenz-containing treatments (so meat, fatty/fried foods are ok), but the side effects of efavirenz are less if you take the pill on an empty stomach.

I hope that's helpful, BY
