HIV 2

Apr 16, 2017

I have a cousin who has HIV 2 and he is from India. Is HIV 2 prevalent in countries like INDIA?. What are the best medicines for HIV 2 as I heard some of HIV 1 medicines are not that effective. Your suggestions are appreciated and thank you doing great help to the community.

Thanks

Response from Dr. Young

Hello and thank you for posting.

HIV-2 infection is principally found among people in West Africa and countries with a historical connection with the region, including Portugal, Spain and Italy. Of course, this doesn't mean that HIV-2 isn't found elsewhere- only with lower frequency.

HIV-2 infection is usually less serious than HIV-1 with a slower rate of disease progression. That said, progression to AIDS does occur, so your question about treatment is relevant. Many drugs developed for HIV-1 are active against HIV-2, but in general, the entire non-nucleoside RT inhibitor (non-nuke) class is not active.
