Hello and thanks for posting.
Sorry to learn about your recent diagnosis. I (and the World Health Organization and the US Department of Health and Human Services Panel) disagree with your doctor- these organizations' evidence-based treatment guidelines recommend HIV treatment initiation for all people living with HIV. One's CD4 count is not a critical factor in this recommendations, as the risk of serious health threats (like TB, cancer or AIDS or death) is significantly reduced with treatment, even in people without symptoms or those with high CD4 counts.
People who initiate treatment (especially those who start before serious illness) can have normal life spans with high quality of life. HIV medications can eliminate transmission to others- having an undetectable viral load on treatment essentially eliminates the risk of sexual transmission. More than anything else, this is the best way to reduce risk of transmission to others.
Today's treatments are very effective, durable and rarely cause significant side effects; most treatments are dosed once-daily, with one (or sometimes two or three) pills. #HIVtreatmentworks
Beyond HIV treatment, staying engaged in your health care, preventive medical interventions (like annual flu and periodic pneumonia vaccinations; cancer and mental health screenings) can ensure that you live a long, healthy and happy life.
Be well, BY
