Response from Dr. Young
Hello and thanks for posting.
I share your concern about your brother's health. I'm less concerned about his alcohol or smoking, but if he's not on HIV treatment and loosing weight, this is an ominous sign of AIDS wasting.
I'd try to help him understand that HIV treatments work, are very well tolerated and can reverse his health decline, prevent serious illness or even death. Starting can be scary, but without treatment, his overall prognosis is very poor (and that should be even more scary).
Perhaps encourage him to review the many blogs from people living with HIV on TheBody.com- understanding how others have lived with their diagnosis and medications can be very helpful.
Please feel free to write me back at the forum if I can be of any additional assistance. BY
