hiv

Aug 14, 2015

Hi I would like to be anonymous, I just find out that I'm hiv positive so I want to know as ma cd4 is 264 .do I need to start medication? N will it drop if I don't take meds?

Response from Dr. Young

Hello and thanks for posting.

Sorry to learn about your recent HIV diagnosis.

Around the world, all national treatment guidelines recommend HIV treatment if your CD4 count is at your level. In many nations, and soon globally, HIV treatment is recommended independent of CD4 count or clinical status. Indeed, not only will your CD4 count drop if you don't start on meds, the recently published START study shows that even among asymptomatic people with CD4 counts above 500, delaying treatment is associated with increased rates of serious medical problems (like TB and cancer) and death.

Hope that helps and be well, BY
