HIV Positive Father & HIV negative mother
Jul 25, 2015

Dear Dr. Young

My friend is HIV positive and his wife is tested negative. Would there be risk for their child to be HIV positive? Would you recommend testing for the child. Appreciate your advise. Thank you very much.

Response from Dr. Young

Hello and thanks for posting.

It's entirely possible for your friends to have a healthy child. If the mother is HIV negative, there's no risk to the child at time of birth. Zero. No HIV testing is needed.
