How regular should I do a viral load test

Aug 22, 2014

I was diagonised with HIV in September 2013 with a viral load of over 2 million. I have been on ARV's but haven't checked on my viral load because my care giver insist that I must wait for a period of 12 months before doing another viral load test. At present I am in good health but just curious to know about my viral load numbers

Response from Dr. Young

Hello and thanks for posting.

I'm not sure what country (or planet, for that matter) you live in, but US guidelines recommend getting viral load "preferably within 2-4 weeks, and no later than 8 weeks after" starting treatment and every 3-4 months in the first two years of treatment. Once every 12 months is a very long time, especially right after starting.
