timing of Meds

May 10, 2001

Dr. My wife started treatment 11 weeks ago on Zerit (twice daily) Epivir (twice daily)and Kaletra ( 3 tabs twice daily). She also has TB and has to take many meds for that. My question is: how accurate must the timing be for her anti retrovirals as she has not missed a dose but sometimes is up to 1 and a half hours late due to side effects of TB meds. Her viral load was 361000 and CD4 81 prior to treatment

Response from Dr. Boyle

The regimen your wife is on is very effective, well tolerated and pretty forgiving regarding the dosing schedule. So long as she takes every dose, being late by up to 1 hour should not pose any problem. The key, of course, is taking every single dose!
