About my HIV Test
Jun 5, 2014

Doctor, good day, I did a HIV test and it was positive, what I'm seen is HIV-1 DNR 2.7*10*4 CD4T cell 170 And the doctor is asking to wait for about test that will come out in 1 month, but I have no symptoms yet, I was thinking I should start taking treatment, what should I do?

Response from Dr. Young

Good day and thanks for posting.

If I understand your results, they say that your HIV+, HIV viral load (RNA or DNA) is 27,000 copies/mL and CD4 count 170.

If so, then you shouldn't be waiting to start treatment (though it would be good to have confirmation and HIV resistance test), but a CD4 count below 200 is indicative of an AIDS diagnosis. All international treatment guidelines recommend prompt initiation of ART at this point.

Minimally, we'd start patients like you on antibiotics (usually trimethoprim/sulfa- Bactrim) to prevent Pneumocystis pneumonia- even while waiting for other lab results.

Hope that helps, BY
