Mar 23, 2014

Dr i already asked a question about hiv on march 10,2014.my question was can anybody get aids by fear and anxiety about it.eventhough he is not engaged in any of the methods of hiv transmission?the answer given is fear and anxiety alone can't cause hiv infection.but stigma, discrimination and ignorance about hiv increase one's risk.Dr will you plz explan in detail what do you mean by stigma, discrimination and ignornance about hiv can increase ones risk?

Response from Dr. Young

Hello and thanks for posting again.

One only acquires HIV through sexual intercourse or by sharing injectable drugs. What I meant about stigma, discrimination and ignorance was that these factors increase the likelihood of riskier behaviors. In and of themselves stigma discrimination against do not cause HIV infection.
