Hiv transmission from undetectable viral load
Mar 21, 2014
Hi Dr. Young,
What is the probability you get infected from unprotected sex from and hiv person with undetectable viral load?
Thanks a lot!
Response from Dr. Young
Hello and thanks for posting your interesting question.
We've learned tons from the HPTN 052 and recent PARTNER study about the risks of HIV transmission from people on treatment. Collectively these massive studies show that being on treatment dramatically reduces risk of HIV transmission.
In the PARTNER study, there were no new HIV infections from an undetectable positive to negative sexual partner after about 45,000 sexual events, about 15,000 of which were without the use of a condom. From this, we could estimate that the risk of HIV transmission (if it even occurs) is probably no greater than 1 in 15,000.
Hope that helps, BY
