HIV and Syphilis
Mar 14, 2014

Good morning Dr. Young,

thanks for your invaluable help to all of us through this forum.

I am HIV+ and take Complera to manage the disease. During my last check-up, my doctor found out that I am co-infected with Syphilis (2nd phase). I am treated with a once daily infusion of 2g Ceftriaxon for 2 weeks. Is this regimen likely to clear my infection?

Best wishes from Japan

Response from Dr. Young

Hello and thanks for posting your question from Japan.

Ceftriaxone is an alternative medication for the treatment of syphilis for those who are allergic to penicillin. It should clear the infection, but it's highly recommended that your syphilis titers be monitored to make sure that your response is as expected.

Hope that helps, BY
