Is Tivicay contraindicated with my Almond Milk that has added Calcium?
Feb 3, 2014
I'm on Tivicay and the bottle says "take this medicine at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after magnesium or aluminum containing antacids, or other products containing calcium, iron or zinc." Would that include drinks like "Almond Breeze" (an almond milk drink) that contains "50 percent more calcium than milk" and on the list of ingredients on the bottle includes calcium carbonate? Am I forever going to have to look at all the list of ingredients on foods and drinks so as not to conflict with this medicine?
Response from Dr. Young
Hello and thanks for posting.
Tivicay (dolutegravir) can be taken at the same time as multivitamins; the precaution that you mention is for medications that contain only pure calcium, iron or magnesium (like calcium supplements or Milk of Magnesium).
The almond milk or other foods/drinks should not have any problems with Tivicay.
