It is immediately?
Nov 18, 2013

if I had unprotected sex with an HIV positive woman immediately means that I am infected? Or does it mean that I have a high probability of being infected?

Response from Dr. Young

Hello,

The risk of getting HIV from a single sexual encounter is actually quite low-- though there are many factors, it's less than 1% on average.

Getting started on post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) within 72 hours of exposure can be very effective in preventing infection.

If you think that you are at regular risk of HIV exposure, you might also consider pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). When taken with good adherence, PrEP can also significantly reduce your risk.
