Absent Status Epilepsy & HIV Correlation? Nov 14, 2013 I am a 56 yo male, diagnosed with AIDS 3 years ago with a CD4 count of 19. After 3 years of treatment my CD4 count has stayed at 150 for over a year. I recently began having what appears to be Absent Status Epilepsy symptoms. In reading I see that sometimes autoimmune diseases (I've been a Type I Diabetic most of my life), Herpes infections, and Inflammation can cause this type of epilepsy. Is there any correlation with HIV also? |

Response from Dr. Young
Hello and thanks for posting. Absence seizures (petit mal seizures) are not reported as associated with HIV infection. There is a report of a child who developed absence seizures after starting on efavirenz (Sustiva/Stocrin, part of Atripla) treatment. Hope that helps and best of health. BY |
