|Absent Status Epilepsy & HIV Correlation?
Nov 14, 2013
I am a 56 yo male, diagnosed with AIDS 3 years ago with a CD4 count of 19. After 3 years of treatment my CD4 count has stayed at 150 for over a year. I recently began having what appears to be Absent Status Epilepsy symptoms. In reading I see that sometimes autoimmune diseases (I've been a Type I Diabetic most of my life), Herpes infections, and Inflammation can cause this type of epilepsy. Is there any correlation with HIV also?
Response from Dr. Young
Hello and thanks for posting.
Absence seizures (petit mal seizures) are not reported as associated with HIV infection. There is a report of a child who developed absence seizures after starting on efavirenz (Sustiva/Stocrin, part of Atripla) treatment.
Hope that helps and best of health. BY
