|Complera, NSAIDS and Spinal Surgery
Oct 31, 2013
Hi Dr. Young, I will be undergoing Anterior Lumbar Fusion in the near future. When I began Complera 12 months ago I stopped taking Naproxen due to the possible adverse effects on my kidneys due to the Tenofavir component in Complera. My last kidney function test was good. Could you please tell me if there is and alternative anti- inflammitory med i could use when in post op. care? Thank you for your help!

Hello and thanks for posting.
Given that naproxen (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory) caused kidney injury, I'd be hesitant to use another, especially after the stress of surgery. Rather, I'd use things like aspirin (when your risk of bleeding is decreased), acetaminophen (Tylenol) or narcotics for pain.
Good luck! BY
