Is pep effective?
Response from Dr. Young
Hello and thanks for posting.
PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) is very effective in preventing HIV infection if selected appropriately, started within 72 hours of exposure and adhered to.
Similarly, pre-exposure prophylaxis (treatment with HIV medications before exposure) can also be very effective in preventing HIV if adhered to.
The main issue is that not enough at-risk people know about these important additional options for prevention. I believe that they should be part of any discussion about HIV prevention (or at least whenever we talk about other things, like abstinence or condoms).
