Time between first and second doses of PEP
Aug 23, 2013
Hello. I began my PEP (Lamivudine 300mg once a day, Zidovudine 300mg twice a day, Kaletra 2 tablets twice a day) 17 hours after exposure, at 5pm. For this very first dose I took one Lamivudine tablet, one Zidovudine tablet, and 2 Kaletra tablets. I then began a regular 12-hour regimen the next day, beginning at 9am (one lamivudine, one zidovudine, 2 Kaletra) and then 9pm (one zidovudine, 2 Kaletra). My question is: is the 16 hour gap between my first and second doses of PEP a concern?
Response from Dr. Young
Hello and thanks for posting.
In short, no. The dosing of your medications for PEP is twice daily. While the goal might be considered to be exactly 12 hours apart, in reality, plus or minus a few hours won't have any significant impact.
