kids + hiv
Aug 13, 2013

hi there, this might sound silly but i am really worried. After looking for a job for more or less ever, i finally found one as a secretary for a small kids school (kids from 2 to 8 years old). Since i know i have HIV , i have always avoided kids like mad since i know they can carry way many viruses. Would you suggest not to take the job? Would you consider working with children as a health hazard ? ;))) Thanks so much, C

Response from Ms. Southall

Hi Take the job!

First, are you on medication? Is your viral load undetectable? If yes to both of those questions your immune system can fight off infections. Yes kids carry those little bugs around with them, but as long as you wash your hands and take proper precautions protecting yourself you should be fine. No matter where you work you should take those precautions. I work in a doctor's office and deal with the same thing. As long as your immune system is as healthy as you can make it, take your meds, eat right and get a good night's sleep you putting up the best defense.

Also remember everyone will get sick with a cold or the flu, no matter their HIV status.

Be well and stay safe, Shannon
