generic norvir
May 25, 2013

I believe Norvir comes off patent in June. Any chance a generic will become available at a more reasonalbe price?

Response from Dr. Young

Hi and thanks for posting.

Norvir pricing has long been a a sore point. The 400% increase in price by Abbott Laboratories (now called Abbvie) was the largest single increase in the price of a medication in history.

Because there are multiple patents involved with ritonavir (and many other medications), it's not the first patent to expire, but rather the last that will likely determine when generic ritonavir becomes available in the US.

So, I don't expect a generic version this year, but hopefully in the not-to-distant future.
