|can't taste food
May 16, 2013
I'm hiv positiv and recently had flu for 3 weeks and now I can't taste anything I eat lately. Like any food I eat, whether its spicy or hot I taste nothing, can it be that there's something wrong with my tongue?? Please reply
Response from Dr. Young
Hi and thanks for posting.
The tongue has a layer of cells that like skin, slough off and are replaced my new cells. Sometimes, this happens in such a way (particularly after an acute illness, like the flu) that leaves the sense of taste diminished.
There usually aren't any lasting effects of this, and with time, the tongue (and sense of taste) recovers.
Hope that helps, BY
