Does Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) work for HIV + People too?
Mar 27, 2013
I am currently on Truvada + Isentress and considering becoming sexually active again. I have joined a HIV + dating site and may be potentially be exposed to another living with the virus. I know safe sex is paramount, but if there is a potential accident does the meds I'm on kill the others virus if I am exposed? Thanks again for all your help Doctor Young :)

Hello and thanks for posting.
While superinfection with HIV (getting a second strain after already positive) is rare, but does occur.
It's reasonable to think that being on your ART regimen would likely prevent superinfection, just as pre-exposure prophylaxis would prevent initial primary infection.
Our association, the International Association of Providers of AIDS Care is a strong supporter of medical interventions to prevent new HIV infections. The details of our 2012 Consensus Statement are available online.
