Reliability of Oraquick
Mar 15, 2013
I have recently taken 2 OraQuick test and both have came back negative but my question is how reliable are they? It has been over 8 months since I have had sex and I took a test at 6 and 8 months and both came back negative but for some reason my conscience is not eased. What are the benefits and drawbacks of using the OraQuick versus going to a doctor and having blood drawn?
Response from Dr. Young
Hi and thanks for posting.
Oraquick is very sensitive and specific when administered correctly. Two tests done 2 and 8 months after your last exposure should be definitive.
If these don't assuage your fears, I'm not sure that a online posting will either. I'd recommend seeing your health care provider for an evaluation and blood-based test.
