Important question
Jan 22, 2013

Dear Sir, I realy need an answer to the claim of Janet Yamamoto that FIV can infect humans. US patent http://www.google.com/patents/US8182820 Is this for real? Can my FIV+ cat give me FIV? Can I transmit it to my girlfriend? I will writw until I get an answer.

Response from Dr. Young

Hello,

This is a quote directly from the patent filing:

"To date, there have been no reported cases of retroviral zoonosis between domestic cats and humans. No cases of feline leukemia virus, feline foamy virus and feline immunodeficiency virus infections of humans have been reported, even in populations at high risk for viral exposure, such as veterinarians, animal caretakers and scientists from feline retroviral laboratories."

It would seem to me that neither you or your girlfriend are at any risk.
