| Re: HIV-1 & HIV-2 life expectancy Jan 13, 2013 hello doctor, read ur reply to this question. u have posted a link for comparing life expectancies between HIV-2 infected and uninfected people. can u suggest any paper which shows people with undetectable HIV-1 load (on HAART) leaves similar life expectancy as a HIV negative individual? thanks. |

Hi and thanks for posting. Yes, indeed, there are several studies that allude to this. The largest and most recent comes from this study from Denmark that concluded that "the increased risk of death in HIV-infected individuals is mainly attributable to risk factors that can be identified prior to or in the initial period of antiretroviral treatment" and importantly, "mortality in patients without risk factors on a successful HAART is almost identical to that of the nonHIV-infected population".
