New once-a-year vaccine discovered in Spain
Jan 11, 2013

Hi doctor, I just read the news on the newly discovered vaccine in Spain that would elliminate the daily retroviral meds. Do you think it will take a long time to have it available in America? if ever? Thank you very much for your answer.

Response from Dr. Young

Hi and thanks for posting.

Let's be clear here. What you've referred to isn't a vaccine, it's a candidate strategy that was tested in 22 people.

That strategy, as this report says, lowered the viral load in these patients by about 90% or 1 log10.

It's a long way from saying that a 90% reduction in viral load to eliminating the need for daily medications.

Nonetheless, this is one of several very promising strategies in development that might decrease the need for medications. It will take a lot more science, clinical trials (and the needed funding) and time to see if these candidates meet the test of long-term safety and effectiveness.

Fingers crossed. BY
