Response from Mr. Vergel
No supplement can really protect the kidneys, unfortunately. The best way to protect your kidneys is to maintain your blood pressure under 130/80, hydrate well all day, limit the use of non steroidal pain killers, do not smoke, and have good blood sugar control. This has nothing to do with your kidneys but with a supplement that some physicians think people taking Truvada or Viread should consider. There is a study that showed that people with low vitamin D blood levels who were given vitamin D supplements had improvements in parathyroid hormone level while on tenofovir (part of Truvada). Tenfovir can affect parathyroid hormone levels. This hormone is involved in regulating the blood levels of calcium for the body to use. High parathyroid levels can increase how fast calcium leaches out into the blood from bones, which can increase bone density loss. Low vitamin D, tenofovir, and parathyroid hormone Nelson | |||||||||
