Nov 6, 2012
My boyfriend is HIV+ and he get his medicine where he is from but sometimes getting his treatment is to complicated so we are looking for a better solution. We are thinking of buy the medicine in New York city but we don't know where to go or what we need to do the purchase. So my questions are, where can we go to buy the treatment?, and if the prescription from his doctor can be use here in EEUU?
Response from Dr. McGowan
All HIV meds would need to be dispensed with a prescription in New York. A script written by an MD licensed in any state in the US would be honored.
If your friend has no insurance, he may be eligible for ADAP (AIDS Drug Assistance Program), but would have to be a resident of NY state and meet certain income and asset requirements. ADAP is also available in any of the 50 states for residents of each state. There are also pharmaceutical comapany sponsored programs that may be accessed through Needy Meds (http://www.needymeds.org/). You may be able to get help applying through a social worker in your HIV clinic. Also, certain pharmacies associated with Ryan White (Federal funding) prgrams, such as the pharmacy at the AIDS Program at North Shore University Hospital, have 340B discount priced medications for uninsured residents (however they can still be quite expensive).
Another approach may be looking to enroll in a clinical trial to get access to treatment and contribute to our understanding of new therapies and approaches to treatment. Many large HIV centers and clinicians with large panels of HIV infected patients participate in these trials. You can find local trial sites through your health care provider or on the web: http://aidsinfo.nih.gov/clinical-trials/
