cure is near?
Oct 12, 2012
hi dr young, recently heard of 3 hiv cures (including the berlin man, timothy brown)through bone marrow transplant with ccr5 knock out. i believe, this procedure is risky and costs a lot. still, do u think that in biology (not practically) we found the cure? how long do u expect a radical cure for hiv to hit the market? there is another study on vacc-4x and dermavir which can effectively reduce ART burden, they claim. what is ur opinion about all these developments and when do u expect the cure to come? regards. medical student.
Response from Dr. Young
Hello and thank you for posting your question. While there are three very prominent cases of probable HIV "cure", these cases all involve very toxic (and risky) cancer treatments. As such, I wouldn't look at them as the ready to use cure. Noting that, the fact that the "Berlin case" even exists speaks to the possibilities of cure and should give hope to the millions of people living with HIV.
Indeed, the notion that we can biologically control HIV though manipulation of the person's CCR5 genes is really interesting to me and point to strategies for functional, if not real cure.
Unfortunately, for now, there is no safe cure for HIV infection. While many research groups are working on this critically important question, no single approach is currently yielding the type of results that will result in eradication of HIV from infected individuals. It will take several, if not many more years of research and healthy dose of good luck before we can speak about cure.
