use of regular VALTREX
Aug 15, 2012

Hi, i have been suffering all my life from cold sores. I am on Reyataz, Norvir, Viread and Ziagen. My dermatologist suggested a ten days 500mg a day of Valtrex to take regularly in order to keep the coldsores at bay. Would this, on long terms, interfere with my regime? Thank you so much, C

Response from Dr. Young

Hello C and thanks for posting.

There aren't any significant drug-drug interactions between the herpes drugs valacyclovir (Valtrex) or acyclovir and your HIV medications.

I'm a bit confused about the dosing of the Valtrex that your doctor has proposed. If you have an acute cold sore caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV), the recommended dose is 2000 mg twice daily for 1 day (at the onset of symptoms). For suppression of frequent oral HSV, we'd treat with 500 mg daily chronically.

Hope that helps, BY
