Untreated HIV 2yrs

Jul 29, 2012

My son has HIV and has gone untreated for 2yrs. Can this turn into full blown Aids? Also he has facial lesions over his eyebrows and chin is this part of HIV. He weighs about 130lbs and gets cold very quick in the house with the AC on. I am a confused father seeking answers.

Response from Dr. Young

Hi and thanks for posting.

It's really good to hear of a parent raising concerns for their child's health and HIV.

Yes, untreated HIV can lead to AIDS complications. HIV treatment (antiretroviral medications) is now recommended in the US for nearly all persons living with HIV. There are considerable benefits to the patient's health and early treatment likely lowers risks of non-AIDS complications (like fat loss, heart and bone diseases) too.

Your son should be linked to a non-judgmental, experienced HIV care provider; laboratory tests are done to assess his immediate medical needs and risks.

I hope this is a useful start, but please feel free to write back, BY
