what to substitute for abacavir?
Jul 6, 2012

Aetna isn't covering Abacavir any longer, what's a suitable alternative?

Response from Dr. Young

Hello and thanks for posting.

I've not heard of this before- according to the most current AETNA website, abacavir (Ziagen) is a preferred medication. I'd double check the coverage, and if not available, also consider contacting the Viiv Healthcare patient assistance program.

Nonetheless, if one was forced to switch from abacavir, a typical strategy would be to substitute another NRTI, such as tenofovir (Viread). Such switches should be done with a mindful view of past resistance issues and toxicity/side effect profiles.

I hope that's helpful, BY
