Hello and thanks for posting. I've not heard of this before- according to the most current AETNA website, abacavir (Ziagen) is a preferred medication. I'd double check the coverage, and if not available, also consider contacting the Viiv Healthcare patient assistance program. Nonetheless, if one was forced to switch from abacavir, a typical strategy would be to substitute another NRTI, such as tenofovir (Viread). Such switches should be done with a mindful view of past resistance issues and toxicity/side effect profiles. I hope that's helpful, BY | |||||||||
