reliability of the oraquick advance omt test
May 29, 2012

hello.i would like to know if the oraquick advance that uses oral mucosal transudate, produced by the orasure,is a reliable test? thank you very much.

Response from Dr. McGowan

Dear Sean,

The test is very reliable, FDA statement:

"In the clinical studies by the manufacturer, the OraQuick oral fluid test correctly identified 99.3% of people who were infected with HIV (sensitivity) and 99.8 % of people who were not infected with HIV (specificity). The Food and Drug Administration expects clinical laboratories to obtain similar results."

It is slightly less sensitive when used with oral fluid rather than if blood is used, there can be more false positive results with the oral fluid. A false positive is when the test indicates a person may be infected when they are not. All positive tests require a confirmatory blood test before being called a confirmed positive.

Best, Joe
