Do HIV meds interact with the results of a pregnancy test?
May 1, 2012
Hi there, I would really appreciate any assistance in treating with my query. I am an HIV positive woman in a serodiscordant relationship. Overtime my husband has wanted a baby and so we started trying...with advice of my HIV specialist on keeping him safe. While I don't usually miss my period, I haven't had a period for the last 2 mths; however, successive pregnancy tests keep coming back as negative. My question is, could my HIV drugs be affecting these tests. Oh, I was advised by my HIV specialist that it is now safe to stay on a Atripla while trying to and in the first trimester of pregancy, so I am still on that regimen.
Response from Dr. Young
Neither HIV medications nor HIV itself interferes with the results of pregnancy tests.
