Response from Dr. McGowan
People can get lymph node swelling all the time for many reasons, a cold, ingrown hair, tootache, etc. This is not an indication alone of HIV infection. Lymph nodes are just places that the immune system uses to park lymphocytes (specialized white blood cells) so that they can encounter infections that may get into the body and attack them. They are like the local police station in that part of the body. When you are ready to have sex, be sure to use condoms and talk about HIV and other sexual transmitted diseases with your partner. You both want to be safe! Best, Joe | |||||||||
