| Pep Hiv Apr 22, 2012 Hello dear Doctors, I wanted to know which are the differences between the occupational and non occupational HIV PEP. Could the nPEP be less effective? I also wanted to ask why sometimes two medicines are prescribed while other times three or even four different kind of medicines are suggested to take. Thank you very much for your answers |

Response from Dr. Young
Hello and thanks for posting. There are different US guidelines for evaluation and treatment for non-occupational HIV exposure (nPEP) and for post-occupational-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). This is mostly a historical artifact, rather than any attempt to compare the effectiveness of one strategy over the other. There's no reason to think that nPEP is any less effective than PEP. Also, while the two guidelines recommend a range of therapies, since much of the scientific studies that are the basis of the recommendations is older, many experienced providers may use different regimens. Many of the details to your questions can be found by looking through the nPEP and PEP guidelines. Be well, BY | |||||||||
