|Maraviroc as PrEP?
Mar 12, 2012
couldn't be Maraviroc a proper PrEP as the virus is usually CCR5 tropic, when people are first infected?

Hi and thanks for posting.
In theory, you're correct. It would make sense to try to block HIV entry into cells- CCR5 blockers would do just that. For the same reason, some have advocated the use of integrase inhibitors, to prevent incorporation of HIV genetic material into the CD4 cell chromosome.
The issue is that while this makes theoretical sense, there's been no studies to support it's use. Hence, when smart people sit around tables and write up treatment guidelines, they'd be working off of opinion, rather than best scientific evidence.
