HIV infected before 55 days
Jan 31, 2012

Hi Dr. Joe A person which is HIV infected before 55 days (from current days) can this person able to transfer the HIV virus to another person after 55 days? My another question is after 55 days from explosure to HIV can viral load become increased to certain level which can infect to next person? And my last question is-In HIV infected person, How many days take to viral load become a infectious quantity?

Response from Dr. McGowan

Thanks for your questions.

HIV can be detected in the blood as early as 10-14 days after infection (about 2 weeks). So by 55 days (almost 2 months) most people with infection will have detecatble virus in the blood.

Once there is virus in the blood, it is also in teh body fluids, such as semen and vaginal secretions. The amount of virus in the blood directly realtes with how likely a person may transmit virus to tehir partner. The more virus, the most risky.

Best, Joe
