Dec 22, 2011
so finally there is preventive vaccine from canada got approved by FDA. seems the vaccine is 100% effective. in that case what will happen to millions already infected? they will be left unnoticed after there is preventive vaccine. why there is no more drugs coming out or no therapeutic vaccine? what is there in the fates of millions of ill fated people? will be left to die helplessly? because pharma companies are very selfish and greedy. please reply. thank u doctor.

Whoa there pardner,
Criticism is good, but poorly researched criticism looks only like a rant and is disrespectful at the least.
The preventive vaccine that you speak of hasn't been FDA approved, only the very first phase 1 clinical trial has been approved. This is indeed noteworthy, but phase 1 tests only safety and not vaccine effectiveness.
We all (even the evil pharmaceutical industry that you speak of) wish for either a preventive or treatment vaccine. Billions (I believe) have been spent over the past decades in this search.
The current phase 3 (last stage before FDA approval) HIV research pipeline is actually quite robust at the current moment. We will likely see 2 or 3 new products in the next 2 years, maybe more. Hardly "no drugs coming out".
As for selfish and greedy, I won't defend. Eight years ago this month, our friends (sic) at Abbott Laboratories successfully accounted for the largest-ever price increase (for the HIV drug Norvir) in the history of the global pharmaceutical industry. More contemporary is Doctor Without Borders recent press release about Johnson and Johnson. Corporate social responsibility often leaves much to be desired and the industry open for your critique.
