Azothioprine/Mercaptopurine and MDMA
Oct 13, 2011

What are the SPECIFIC dangers of taking MDMA while on Azothioprine/Mercaptopurine?

Response from Dr. Young

Thanks for posting.

It's good that you're asking about potential issues with combining recreational drugs and medications. Unfortunately, this is not often a well studied subject.

MDMA (otherwise known as Ecstasy, X, E) has the potential for drug-drug interactions, particularly with medications that are metabolized using the cytochrome P450 pathway. Indeed, there have been case reports of fatalities resulting from the use of X in persons taking the most potent P450 inhibitor (and HIV medication), ritonavir.

Azthioprine(Imuran) and mecaptopurine also have the potential for specific drug-drug interactions, but not with P450 nor MDMA.

Hope that helps. Be safe, BY
