Yellow Fever Vaccination BEFORE immunosurpressive therapy

Sep 30, 2011

The live yellow fever vaccine is of course a danger to immunocompromised individuals. I intend to take 6-MP (50mg/day) and Prednisolone (40mg/day, reducing) as soon as possible, but have just had the yellow fever vaccination. How long would you suggest I wait before starting the therapy to avoid complications?

Would the same period apply for other live vaccinations?

Response from Dr. Young

Hello and thanks for posting.

Yes, in general, live virus vaccines should be avoided when possible among persons who are immunosuppressed.

If you already had your yellow fever (or other live) vaccine, I'd wait a couple of weeks before starting immune suppressing medications.

Hope that helps, BY
