survie of blood/open wound
Sep 25, 2011

hi sir Help me in following way 1)how long hiv survive out side of body? 2)blood on open wound is risk to hiv?wound is how old?8 hrs old wound cause hiv? 3)blood of mosqito on fresh wound cause hiv? What are the risks

please help me in these quetions thanks

Response from Dr. McGowan

HIV will not survive long outside the body because the levels in the blood are relatively low, and the amount of virus decreases by 90-99% in a few hours as the blood dries. There has never been a transmission of HIV from the environment.

After 8 hours most wounds will have already started healing...forming a layer of scab, that would prevent HIV transmission. Wash any wound that may be contaminated with soap and water, nothing caustic.

There is really no risk from HIV transmission by mosquito bite. See this great scientific explanation from Rutgers University:

Best, Joe
