is there a vaccine for hiv?

May 31, 2011

Doc, i want to know if there is a vaccine to prevent and safe-guard people from being infected with hiv? And als if a person has been vaccinated for a disease like CSM or hapititis and the person has hiv, would thw vaccination have effect on that person?

Response from Dr. McGowan

Thanks for your question.

Unfortunately we do not yet have a vaccine to protect against HIV. There is great interest by scientists to develop such a vaccine since it would be one very important way to slow down and potentially end this epidemic. There has been one positive study of a vaccine strategy that has some modest benefit but nothing that is ready for use. It would probably take about 10 years to develop and test and prove that a vaccine was effective.

There is good news in teh world in that rates of new infections have decreased (not so in the US). This is due to a combination of several factors: Education of people to protect themselves by using condoms or abstaining from sex, treating other sexually transmitted infections like syphilis and herpes that can make HIV spread more quickly, and using medications to treat people with HIV to make them less likely to transmit the virus or by uninfected people (in pills or vaginal gels) to protect them against infection.

Stay tuned to The Body for more information about vaccines as it come sout.

Best, Joe
