Recently diagnosed - Travelling May 18, 2011 Recently diagnosed. CD4 Count 156, My physician refused to start me on meds because I will be traveling internationally for two and half months. Will be okay? |

 Hello and thanks for your post. Sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis. With a CD4 count below 200, you have an AIDS-defining level of immune function. As such, your immune system is very impaired and you are at risk of serious complications or even death. If it is at all possible, I would recommend starting on HIV medications and preventive antibiotics (trimethoprim-sulfa) as soon as possible--even if this means delaying your travel. Once on medications, there should be no reason why you might not be able to travel, so long as you were tolerating your medications and could arrange for laboratory monitoring. With modern information technologies, it should be straightforward to stay in touch with your physician. Hope this helps, BY | ||||||||
