Accidental needlesticks in long term healthcare facility

Mar 18, 2011

What kind of blood work would be appropriate for an accidental needlestick injury

Response from Dr. Young

Hello and thanks for your question.

Occupational exposure to blood by percutaneous injury usually is followed by employer-dictated protocol. In our institution, minimally, this involves getting HIV, HBV, HCV antibody tests, complete blood count and chemistry tests. We'd obtain tests at baseline, 1 and 3 months.

Depending on the injury and the source patient, post-exposure prophylaxis against HIV could be considered.

Be well, BY
