TAT is a regulatory protein of the HIV virus. It efefcts how virus genes are expressed after a cell becomes infected. This study gave a vaccine directed against TAT to people with HIV who had suppressed their HIV infection with medications. Cells that got infected before the virus was shut down retain HIV viral genes inserted inside their chromosomes. This vaccine strategy will use the immune system to block expression of these genes by blocking TAT.

This is the kind of very interesting and exciting research that is being done to try to get at the remaining cells infected with virus after HAART has brought the viral load to undetectable levels. I remain very hopeful that strategies like this will help restore immune system balance and function which will improve quality and hopefully quantity of healthful life.
