Life span with HIV-2
Nov 24, 2010

If some body is HIV positive in year Nov, 2010 with HIV-2 virus type , What can be his probable life span or life expectancy if it is detected very early and he has access to proper medications and maintains a healthy life style?

Response from Dr. McGowan

HIV-2 tends to progress more slowly than HIV-1. That is a person can be infected for a longer time before having any signs because the amount of HIV-2 in the blood (viral load) is lower than for HIV-1. HIV-2 does respond well to most treatment (some meds like Sustiva and other NNRTIs will not work). Life expectancy with HIV-2 now, like HIV-1 is excellent if you get into care and stay adherent with treatment.

Best,

Joe
