Treatment Advances towards "cure"

Oct 4, 2010

why does it seem as though all of the advances toward the possible cure is coming from other countries? When it came/comes to developing medicines for treatment US Pharma is untouched, but when you talk about cure we play 2nd fiddle to others. Im not trying to put you in tough spot by having to agree or not but I just feel as though if we (USA) were pushing harder for cure we would be much closer by now. Just my .02

Response from Dr. McGowan

Dear 2 cents:

Most of the innovations in treatment do not start with Pharma...they start at the Universities and get picked up by industry once they look promising. There is some very interesting work at the University of Minnesota and University of North Carolina among others here in the US on new treatment strategies to eliminate HIV. Let's hope that the NIH gets enough funding, especially if the budget gets tighter. Often when the choice comes between funding wars and medicine, medicine gets the short end of the stick.

Changing treatment to Atripla?
