Response from Dr. McGowan
HIV itself should not cause any signs on the penis, however certain infections can be more common or severe in people with HIV, especially with low CD4 counts. Sexually transmitted infections, such as syphilis and herpes simplex often accompany HIV and can cause sores on the penis. Human papilloma virus (HPV) can cause warts or sores on the penis and may also cause cancer. fungal infections can grow under the foreskin on uncircumcized men. Kaposi's sarcoma (a type of tumor) can also grow on the penis. Erectile dysfunction can be caused by low testosterone (a hormone) in teh blood which is common in men with HIV infection. These are the most common. You shouldn't be ashamed to ask your doctor about anything that you think is not normal, even on the penis. Best, Joe | |||||||||
