known exposure
Mar 27, 2010

I was punctured with a surgical instrument that had been used on a high risk patient. Is the hospital required to keep any forms of prophylactics like Atriple and how soon should these meds be started and how long is to long to wait for a first dose

Response from Dr. Young

Hello and thank you for your post.

Post-exposure prophylaxis should be started as soon as possible after the exposure and definitely within 72 hours (afterwards, there's little benefit). The availability of the medications is probably subject to local policy and protocol, but if you live in the US, you should be able to receive medications promptly in commercial pharmacies (just call around to check on the availability, don't take no for an answer).

Good luck and good health, BY
